Seaside Bash
If a beach vacation isn't on your calendar, the next best thing is a sea-themed dinner party. Darcy Miller suggests bringing the ocean indoors with shells. "Use shells for decor, place-card holders, and even favors," says Miller. Along with decorating your table with real shells, consider scallop shells for holding candy and place cards made of paper print outs of shells and sea creatures. "And if the party's at night, set votives in larger glass containers filled with sand to bump up the beachy vibe," says Miller.

Patterned Plates
While sticking with one style of dishware is classic, it's also fun to mix and match designs. "When I want to have an intimate get-together for a small group, I mix the dessert plates," says Beth Diana Smith. "One unique plate of each pattern sits on the table and guests sit at their favorite pattern. You'd be surprised how many times people get caught up in talking about which pattern they chose. It's a fun and unique ice breaker. "

Multi-Level Centerpieces
Summer table decorations are meant to be unique. Instead of traditional vases, experiment with items that can be used for unconventional centerpieces. Event planner David Stark recommends everything from cake stands to pitchers that can create a visually appealing, multi-level effect for a summer table. "Although the shapes and scales might vary of the individual containers, if the vessels are in the same general color and material palette, they will work beautifully as a unified set," he says.

Elegant Florals
If you're on the hunt for a simple way to craft an elegant summer table, consider using a gorgeous flower as a place setting, as Darcy Miller has done in this picture. You can use the same flowers for each setting or mix them up for even more visual interest. Choose understated napkins to keep the focus on the flowers.

Lemonade-Themed
Summer is all about fruit. Entertaining expert Darcy Miller loves to incorporate seasonal produce like cherries, watermelon, or slices of citrus, into her summer table settings. "Along with having the real thing on hand for snacking and decor, you can top cupcakes with candied fruit, fill bowls with the fresh stuff as a centerpiece, and print out paper versions for place cards, menus, or hanging garlands," says Miller.

Vegetable Centerpieces
A centerpiece of fruit is always a good idea, but who said vegetables can't work as well? "Vegetables as centerpieces feels very summertime-fresh," says designer Beth Diana Smith. "I love using bunches of cilantro (or anything green and leafy) in textured bowls, corn (with the husks on) in long trays, or bowls filled with pineapples or mangoes as centerpieces."
